Patients seeking dental implants in Dallas will discover they have quite a choice of competent dentists who offer this technology. These devices are small precision-made metal inserts that are fitted into the jawbone. They replace roots that may have become diseased and act as anchors for components such as dentures and bridges.

During insertion, a socket is drilled into the patients jaw in the exact position needed for the replacement fittings. The implant can then either be screwed or tapped into position. Most devices are made of titanium or titanium alloy. These materials have been shown over many years to be well tolerated by human bone.

There are many different types available, and they offer a highly reliable solution. Once in place, they will become more secure over time as the patients bone will meld with the implant. A single missing tooth can be replaced with a single implant, but when two or more teeth are missing they may not necessarily require one device per tooth.

The number needed will depend upon the quality of bone in the jaw, and the type of tooth replacement being considered. Bone density is generally poorer in the upper jaw that in the lower. Therefore, more implants are generally are needed in the upper jaw when several teeth need to be replaced.

In the lower jaw where bone density tends to be strong, as few as four devices can be fitted to support a new row of teeth. That said, five or six would typically be fitted. Devices have to adhere to basic engineering principles in order to provide an effective, reliable, comfortable long-term solution. They must be inserted into a strong foundation, and there must be enough of them to comfortably support the loads that are placed upon them.

A common use for these devices is for fitting overdentures. An overdenture is a complete set of teeth that is fitted as one unit to either the upper or lower jaw. They are removed daily for cleaning, but when inserted back into the mouth, implants hold them in place much more securely.

The vast majority of patients are good candidates for oral implantation. Those with good overall health are unlikely to be turned down for treatment. Some patients however may not be good candidates. Those with heavy drinking or smoking habits may be turned down due to the impact their habits can have on their body's healing capacity. Treatment planning can also be compromised by the effect their habits may have on their existing teeth.

When patients first enquire about dental work, it is often with regard to ongoing oral health concerns. It is important that basic problems are dealt with before any implants are fitted. Common issues like gum disease, decay and abscesses must be taken care of before any implantation work is undertaken.

Patients looking for dental implants in Dallas should have no trouble finding a competent dentist who can perform this kind of work. This is a mature technology that has proven safe and effective for many years. Patents who undergo this kind of work should have many years of trouble-free oral health to look forward to.
