IV nutritional therapy has been with us for a while now. In recent times, its popularity has increased tremendously thanks to the aggressive marketing campaigns by producers of these products. There have been numerous arguments that have supported the use of the therapies citing their many advantages. It is very important to ensure that you get the right information before deciding to use any of these products.

IV nutrients are indicated in number of cases. They are used for persons that are too sick to eat normally. In these patients there are no additional benefits of using this route; it is a survival measure. In other groups of people, the treatment is used to deliver nutrients that may be deficient in the body.

Nutritional therapy is currently used widely as supportive therapy for cancer patients. Cancer patients are usually exposed to chemotherapy, radiotherapy or both. These treatments are associated with obliteration of the normal immunity component of the body since the treatments do not differentiate between the normal and abnormal cells. Having proper nutritional supplementation helps in the restoration of the immune system even after undesired destruction takes place.

One of the major advantages of IV therapies over oral supplementation is that they are more effective t-in correcting intracellular mineral deficiencies in the body. Since they are delivered directly into the blood stream, the digestive tract is bypassed and any factors that hinder absorption are avoided. This is of particular significance in patients that have low levels of hydrochloric acid.

There are numerous nutrients that can be administered through the intravenous route. Calcium supplements are among the most commonly administered. This mineral is of great importance both structurally and functionally. Calcium is the main component of bones and teeth and plays a vital role in nerve impulse transmission and muscle contraction. Persons with reduced levels of calcium suffer from conditions such as osteoporosis, osteomalacia, irritability, muscle cramps and osteoarthritis.

Zinc and magnesium are the other elements that are frequently supplemented intravenously. These two share some of their functions with calcium. Magnesium is said to take part in at least 300 biological reactions. It is required for maintenance of muscle and nerve function as well proper functioning of the immune system. Zinc helps in a number of areas that include wound healing, immune function and proper development of pregnancy. Others include vitamins B1, B2, B6, E, C and folate.

The treatment is quite easy to receive. There may or may not be some pain when intravenous access is established but this is easily tolerated. Some patients usually request for a small amount of analgesia. Apart from making a request in advance, not much preparation is required. The treatment is done slowly in 1to 2 hours so as not to overwhelm the body.

There are several side effects that have been associated with the use of IV Nutritional Therapy. Allergic reactions are fairly common. These are associated with the preservatives that are used together with the nutrients. Currently, products that do not require the use of preservatives are being developed. Other risks include infection, clotting and bleeding.
